CHOOSING THE PERFECT PAGEANT DRESS FOR THE EVENING GOWN COMPETITION

The evening gown competition in a pageant can be 10% or more of your final score. It’s important to not get docked on the little things that can help you win the evening gown segment of the pageant. And that starts with finding the perfect pageant gown.

This is the time you can bring out that prom dress and reuse it! Many pageant goers bring two dresses with them keeping one as backup. What if you were to fall and tear your gown? What if someone else decided to take you out at their competition by slicing your gown? I’d like to think that would never happen, but are you prepared if it does?

GET NOTICED and STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD
In choosing the perfect pageant gown the first thing you want to go it get noticed. You need to be the red apple in a room full of green apples.

KNOW WHAT LOOKS GOOD ON YOUR BODY SHAPE
To do so, first you have to know what looks good on your figure type and what colors look good with your skin (check our blog for information on finding a prom dress that looks good on your body type). Pageants gowns are no different than prom dresses when it comes to what looks good on a body type.

KNOW WHAT COLORS LOOK GOOD WITH YOUR SKIN
Some people look good in browns, other can look like they are sick with the flu in brown.  If you don’t know your color type read our blog post on how to find what colors look good on you. Once you know your color, consider this, every evening gown pageant winner I have found the pageant winners wore solid colors . Most wore white evening gowns. I loved seeing Miss USA 2015 in a solid fuchsia color ball gown. She stuck out on stage and she won the evening gown competition.  Her dress was a full ball gown in comparison to the others who wore mostly sheath gowns. Consider how the dress will look on TV and on stage as well. Bright lights can not only wash a pageant dress out and the girl that’s in it but bright lights have been known to see right through pageant gowns! So make sure you choose a dress that is lined.

NOTE WHAT LOOKS GOOD ON YOUR MAY NOT LOOK GOOD ON ANOTHER BEAUTY QUEEN
You’ve probably seen the “who wore it better” articles in magazines or online. Two pageant girls wearing the same pageant dress can look completely opposite.

CONSIDER HOW FAR AWAY THE JUDGES ARE
If your pageant gown has a lot of intricate details, will the judges be able to see them? While choosing your beautiful pageant gown, stand as far away from the mirror as the judges will be preferably with bright lights shinning down on you.

POPULAR BEAUTY PAGEANT DRESSES
Pageant style gowns that are popular include: Strapless, spaghetti straps, sweetheart necklines, halter top-type straps, crisscrossed straps, etc. The pageant dress also plays a part in winning your contest. Satins shine beautifully under the harsh lights as well as sequined pageant gowns. There have been short pageant gowns but most contestants opt for floor length.

SHOP FOR PAGEANT SHOES HERE
Another important feature are the pageant shoes. Please walk in them prior to the day of the pageant. Make sure you do not tromp like a horse across the stage. Instead float like a ballerina. Practice walking down stairs. It’s always best if you don’t have to look at your feet while walking down the stairs. Opt for sticking on non-skids to the bottom of your shoes. And make sure to have your pageant shoes with you when you attend your alteration tailoring appointments! You’ll want the dress 1/2″ off the floor and only 1/2″. Go to a tailor who knows what judges look for in pageant gowns.
